Hard to beat at the priceReview date: 2010-06-10 Rating: 10 out of 10Similar to the first reviewer, I got one of the first of these about 4 years ago, its seen heavy use here, I am an ex session musician and used to gig regularly for over 20 years. Similar to him I am a heavy player and on stage am rarely miked up. I bought this as I moved to a smaller house with neighbours well within earshot of an accoustic kit even an accoustic kit with dampening pads on. So I looked at the Roland and Yamaha kits but expense pushed them beyond what I would pay. So I bought this, similar to the first reviewer my first thoughts were oh no plastic brackets, but to be fair they have withstood 4 years of playing now. The only thing I have had to repair was one of the jack sockets on a pad. To be honest the 3.5mm jack socket they use is junk, but at this price you arent going to get much more than that. A few pence spent at maplin and 10 minutes soldering and its back up working perfectly. Playing it it compares well to my accoustic kit and much better than the accoustic kit with DDrum triggers fitted. It has a nice feel to the pads which allow stick bounce like a normal kit and dont simply absorb the impact. As someone else said I would use this quite happily to teach on, I dont think I would gig it as I doubt it would survive very long. But having said that the new band want me to try it so for a while there will be two kits on stage, only time will tell how long it lasts. for any prospective buyer I would say you will need extra pads for this, I bought two more initially but I now have extra yamaha pads on it as well as the originals which work perfectly with the module. All in all I would say whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro looking for a practice kit, buy it, you wont be sorry. My only negatives are the poor quality jack sockets and the occasional phantom mistrigger when things get frantic.
ReviewsExcellentReview date: 2010-01-21 Rating: 10 out of 10This is an excellent kit. I originally bought it just to enable me to practice in my flat and wasn't expecting miracles given the cost. But now I'm using it to teach and even to record band demos. It's quick and easy to set up, and has a vast selection of samples, meaning you can set up the sound just how you want it. Highly recommended!AmazingReview date: 2007-12-16 Rating: 10 out of 10This is an amazing piece of kit. I am not a drummer but play guitar, bass and occasionally key's. I have, however , played drums in the past ((30 odd years ago). If this had been available at the time I might have stuck to drumming!
I bought it for my son at £400 from another supplier about a year ago as we couldn't accomodate a ful size kit, and didn't want to annoy the neighbours. Even I play it now and again and find it so easy. My son is having lessons now and I would reccomend it even though most drum teachers don't. (They are a bit stuck in the past!) The one thing it could use is an additional pad as you need to use one as a high hat open/close if you are going to play properly.
At this price unbeatable.
Ian Sharwood. This kit is NOT plastic junk !Review date: 2007-05-16 Rating: 10 out of 10I am a drummer of acoustic kits for many years but having moved to a small apartment had a need for a practice kit which wouldn't take up too much space. I saw this kit, loved the price tag, and decided to try it out and give it away as a gift if it didn't give me what I needed. Well, I'm pleased to say that it has !
I knew the DM5 brain well, having used one before on an ancient leccy kit, so I knew it worked well. The DM5 is a fairly old module by today's standards, but still has some nice sounding, no nonsense kits, and is configurable in terms of pitch, pan, volume of the individual sounds. It's got AUX phono outputs 2x L&R for mixing to PA systems etc.
When I opened the box I thought the rest of the frame and the connectors themselves looked a bit ropey - the connectors and clamps are plastic - argh !. I imagine they are plastic in order to make the overall kit light (much, MUCH lighter than a full metal kits like the Pintech I used to have). I play fairly hard usually, and haven't held back much on playing the kit - it hasn't cracked or broken. Just make sure you don't OVER tighten the plastic joints as I think they might be the first thing to split. The hat pedal is plastic too (ugh !) but it actually works better than it looks (adequately), and the kick pedal although light, is METAL, REAL and has spring-adjustable action ! I guess you could theoretically hook-up your own single or double kick pedals. Set up is a piece of cake, it's all pretty obvious what goes where and then just connect the 3.5mm plugs to the brain. It took me all of 20 mins to get up and running.
I've only had this kit a month and nothing has broken...yet. There's a bag of spares which comes with it.
Oh yeh, being MIDI you can connect your computer to it !! Buy a cheap USB-MIDI cable and sequencing software, then record your own drum patterns and play the kit from the computer, record and loop sounds etc. Play along with your favourite tunes. You can even get on the internet and jam with friends using things like Ninjam etc. Great fun ! If you hook up the computer, there's also many tuition software packages available which are very cheap and have metronomes etc. Have all that on a laptop and you have a truly portable drum studio !
Pros: Excellent value for money. Can't beat it for the price. Everything works. Great practice kit to have in the corner of the room. and I think it would stand some weekly rehearsals and a couple of gigs in an emergency. It's a practice kit - stick on your headphones and the neighbours will never know you're rocking it out !
Cons: Pads not dual-zone, so no cymbal choking, rimshots etc. available on more expensive kits. No stool - So if you're just starting out you need to get one !. No metronome in the DM5 brain.
Summary - GREAT fun, practical practice kit to have around the home for beginners and semi-pro's alike. Looks like it might not stand hard playing or gigging, set-up/tear down, for prolonged periods of time but it ain't broke yet ! And you can't beat the price !!
