ReviewsGreat for beginners or experienced drum playersReview date: 2009-09-07 Rating: 8 out of 10I have had this Drum machine for just over a month now and it has provided me with hours of fun!
I have some experience of playing the Tablas (Indian Drums), but none of playing on a Drum kit. However, the Yamaha DD65 is very easy to use with superb/realistic sounds on all of the 50 different drum kits.
The machine also allows you to have 3 customised drum kits by assigning any drum/sound from the 50 drum kits to any of the 8 pads. This is a great feature and also good if you are left handed and want to change position of some of the drums.
Overall, the in-built speakers are very good, although the Bass Drum sound produced by them isn't that great. You would need a sub-woofer speaker to produce a better bass drum sound - I get around this by connecting the DD65 to my Hi-Fi. For any Tabla players out there, the sound is very good, but difficult to play faster beats without alot of practice.
The pads are high quality, although the two pedals for Base drum and Hi-hat are too small and can sometimes move around on the floor. However, this is only a minor issue and you can buy proper pedals to attach to the unit if you want.
I would recommend the DD65 to anyone who wants to learn playing drums but doesn't have the space for a full kit. The overall sound produced is excellent and very realistic.Great for beginners - and even afterReview date: 2009-07-18 Rating: 8 out of 10Like most reviewers, I got this for a kid for reasons of price, available space, headphones etc. My 10 year-old son took to it straight away. He totally loves it.
After reading the reviews here I made sure I got a serial number with the MIDI problem solved. Here are the pros and cons of this little box
Pros:
- small and cheap
- well made with usual Yamaha quality, despite plastic feel.
- lots of good sounds and kits
- good variety of songs to practice along to
- can be mounted on a snare-drum stand
- midi compatible
- decent speaker - doesn't need an external amp
- can work with better pedals (see cons below)
- hand drumming mode
- even if the kid (or grown-up) moves to a real kit - this will stay a useful addition (for more sounds) or late-night practise kit
- can use HEADPHONES!!! :-)
Cons:
- the pedals - especially the kick drum - are naff. Recommend future purchase of better pedals (the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5)
- electronic drums can encourage bad technique (such as leaving the stick on the pad and not bouncing). This mitigated by getting proper lessons and watching out for this problem
- the rich variety of tones possible from a real kit are not possible (a problem with many electronic kits, and this is offset by the ability to dial up hundreds of different sounds
- to get a proper drumming position it really needs a snare drum stand and a "throne" to sit on. Not really a criticism - after all you don't buy a snare drum and put it on the floor. But more expense is possible
- "real" electronic kits are getting almost as cheap.
I can recommend this kit either as a good starter for a child or as a nice supplement for a real kit. As mentioned in the cons, care needs to be taken to ensure proper drum technique is observed as the DD-65 is more forgiving to some poor stick techniques than a real drum.
Update 10 months year later:
My son has been getting lessons on this thing for about half a year. He plays on it most days and and now also play percussion at a local youth concert band. He has not had any problems converting from the cramped layout of the DD-65 to the more spaced-out real kit. The DD-65 has been enough to learn the rhythms and the co-ordination. He will eventually outgrow the DD-65 when he needs to learn the subtle nuances of drumming on real skins and cymbals, but he has not reached this stage yet. I think I have another year before I need to put my hand in my pocket again.
Excellent value for money, but it's not pro kitReview date: 2009-07-06 Rating: 8 out of 10I had this set up and working in seconds. I particularly liked being able to run it from batteries (6 C-size) as well as the AC adapter, and its small size.
On the negative side, the foot pads are pretty disappointing, although with a little practice they're functional enough.
The loudspeakers are pretty bad: the stick sound hitting the drum too loud. You are much, much better off using an external amp: I used a Vox DA5 battery powered amp, and despite it being the same 5W power, the sound is much, much better.
At the time I purchased it, it was being sold on Amazon with a recommended Yamaha X frame stand that is completely incompatible. Either put it on a low table, or use a generic snare drum stand (for which the DD65 has appropriate receptacles).
All in all, I have found it a good way to dip my toe into drumming, but for anything much more than occasional hobbyist use, a purchaser may find it rather limited.Brilliant!Review date: 2009-06-27 Rating: 10 out of 10This machine is great! It's ideal for anyone who either can't afford a proper drum kit or doesn't have the space. It can keep you occupied for hours and even has a headphone socket for a quiet practice if you don't want to disturb anyone you live with. It's also got a great click/metronome which helps you to keep in time when you're practicing and there's also demo tracks you can play along with as well. Another really cool feature is that you can even play it in hand drum mode, without the drumsticks, kind of like you're playing bongos. That's a pretty cool function!
Buy it! I highly recommend it!
