Please don't do buy it!Review date: 2009-05-31 Rating: 2 out of 10Well said S.Hall "Steve" I agree with everything he said, though I feel he's been generous in giving it an extra star to me.
I'm a guitarist and wanted a drum kit for fun really, a bit of home recording and for the kids to enjoy themselves on. I always thought Alesis was the 'be all and end all' of electronic percussion, maybe they are but my experience doesn't live up to that. I looked at dozens of kits, I even toyed with selling a kidney and buying a Roland kit, but Alesis have such a good name and the DM5 came with the 'pro' heading, I thought I was onto a winner, how wrong could I have been.
Set up took me about 2 hours, all went fine but when it came to plugging in the drum heads, hi hat etc, it all got a bit confusing. The wife arrived in the spare bedroom soon after the swearing began and with a little anger management helped me to sort it out, although it tested even her laid back 'lets just sort this out calmly' approach.
Once up and running the disappointment just kept on coming. The high hat was about as responsive as a drugged up dog on a sunny afternoon. Thought it might be a dodgy cymbal unit but after swapping them about I realised the problem lay within the drum module itself. Just like Steve, along with it not responding very well, it sounded as if the high hat was closing itself without my foot being anywhere near the pedal. The drum pads seemed pretty good however, although the wheel on the module that you use to allocate the sounds jumped, it didn't go 1,2,3,4,5 etc it went 1,4,7,2,19,5 etc. selecting a number from the menu was like trying to nail jelly to a dart board.!
Forgive my light hearted review on this drum kit, I'm writing it at mid-day on a Sunday, had I have written it at mid-day yesterday it would have included some truly fruity language. I used by bonus from work to buy this kit, I've been looking forward to getting it for ages, unfortunately the anticipation of owning it far, far, far outweighed the real thing. As soon as the retailer I purchased this off is open tomorrow, I'll be ringing them to get a refund. Please don't buy a Alesis DM5 `Pro'. Just go for a full kit and fall out with your neighbours. The best thing I can say about this heap of junk is that I was able to dismantle it in only 30 minutes, Yes 30 minutes. Sorry alesis but this kit is a joke, a sick one, but none the less a joke.
We all agree that drummers aren't proper musicians, but not even they deserve to be subjected to the frustration and anger I have.
ReviewsGreatReview date: 2009-03-06 Rating: 8 out of 10Bought this for my 12 year old son who is having drum lessons with money he saved. It was £299 then but see its gone up a lot! Have to say it's great. The pads give a real feel and are pretty sensitive, whilst the sounds are clear (good cymbals and hi-hat). I researched quite a bit and found other kits without the module or only 1 tom for a similar price so be careful. He's really happy with it and can of course plug in the headphones so doesn't drive me mad. I also get on it and think its great value.Great KitReview date: 2009-02-14 Rating: 8 out of 10This DM5 Pro Kit Is Brilliant For Beginners, It Has A Nice Feel And Is Fairly Easy To Build, Everything Supplied In Box. Although, After Having This For A While, It Doesn't Have The Same Feel As A Real Acoustic Kit. By The Way: This Kit Does NOT Come With A Kick Pedal.Dodgy!Review date: 2009-01-09 Rating: 4 out of 10I purchased this kit after reading the largely positive reviews on amazon. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectation. I know it's very cheap for an electronic drum kit, and that you get what you pay for in this world. However, there are some things that just aren't acceptable.
I must have spent about 3 or 4 hours setting it up how I wanted it, all the while struggling to comprehend the poorly written instruction manual. After finally mounting the module, I switched it on and sat down to play. It all sounded pretty good... except the snare sounded like a cymbal. So I contacted Alesis via telephone ( to be fair, they were easy to contact and very helpful ). The guy tells me that the instructions had been printed wrong and that I had to plug a lead from the snare into a different input on the module. Success! My snare sounded like a snare. How had Alesis managed to get it wrong in the instruction manual??? I played a bit more and noticed that the snare pad seemed to be less sensitive than the other drum pads. Dynamically, the snare pad is pretty bad. If you want to play some gentle double strokes, for example, it doesn't trigger any sound from the module.
On a positive note, it does feel pretty good to play. Apart from bass drum batter head, that feels like a block of wood. Even losening the screws makes very little difference.
So... onto the next problem... My hi- hats sounded like they were closing themselves without my foot being anywhere near the high- hat switch pedal. Another quick call to Alesis and now the guy tells me that the module software probably needed updating and that I should send it back to the retailers to get it done. Since I'd spent ages setting it up, I didn't really fancy doing that. 'Do you have a usb midi- interface' the guy asks me. Suffice to say, I didn't and i wasn't prepared to buy one. So, that was enough for me. I contacted the retailer and asked for a refund. I got my money back with no fuss and that was the best thing about this drum kit.
Perhaps I am less tolerant than most people. I suppose for £300, this kit might be what you'd expect. But I wanted more. To be honest, if the high- hats had worked properly, I probably wouldn't have sent it back. Perhaps I just got a one- off faulty kit or something. Maybe if I had a usb midi- interface to update the module, it would have sorted it out. I don't know. But for me, this is something to avoid.
Alesis DM5Review date: 2008-11-03 Rating: 10 out of 10The Alesis DM5 is in my opinion fantastic... ! My reason being that it is very similar to playing on a real drum kit, with the pads on the drums to the cymbals and the kick. It all feels brill ! Also it is well worth getting on to the Alesis Store and buying Surge cymbals to go with it, i havent got them myslef but they look quality and i will be getting them soon. Overall a really nice piece of equipment and ive had no problems just yet ! Good price as well (B.T.W it does not come with a Lead for the Snare drum or a pedal for the base drum so make sure you get those before)!
